ABSTRACT

A Study on the Effect of Halloysite Nanotubes on the Thermal, Durability and Biodegradability Performance of Poly-(hydroxy-butyrate-hydroxy-valerate)-PHBV Nano Bio-composites

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the thermal, durability, and biodegradability properties of Poly (hydroxy butyrate hydroxy valerate) (PHBV) biocomposites. At first, 0-15 wt% HNTs was dispersed into the chloroform solution by ultrasonication process. The solution was then added into the PHBV matrix to prepare thin films using solvent casting method. The films were characterized using Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), andFourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Additionally, water absorption kinetics and soil burial tests were also performed. The results showed significant morphological changes and enhanced thermal stability in the PHBV/HNT samples, with an optimum increase in onset and decomposition temperatures at 10 wt. % HNT loading. Also, the PHBV/HNTs samples showed high water resistance and faster soil degradation in comparison to the pristine counterpart.
